Over half of breast cancers occur in women aged 65 and over and so in a bid to improve treatments and outcomes for women in this age-group, researchers at Nottingham University Hospitals NHS Trust (NUH) have joined a national research trial which will provide fresh hope for millions of women diagnosed with breast cancer.

Three-dimensional (3-D) power Doppler ultrasound helps radiologists distinguish between malignant and benign breast masses, according to a new study being published in the November issue of Radiology. “Using 3-D scans promises greater accuracy due to more consistent sampling over the entire tumor,” said lead author, Gerald L. LeCarpentier, Ph.D.

State officials mark National Mammography Day by reporting that breast cancer incidence and mortality rates in Wisconsin are declining, but some women are still not getting screened. “The need for effective and early screening is still very important,” said Secretary Karen Timberlake.

Jodi Rell, a breast cancer survivor, is promoting the importance of breast cancer screening and early detection, especially for women older than 40. “As a breast cancer survivor, I am a firm believer of the importance of early detection,” Governor Rell said.

Vanderbilt-Ingram Cancer Center’s Specialized Programs of Research Excellence (SPORE) in Breast Cancer has received a new round of grant funding from the National Cancer Institute (NCI). The NCI will provide $12 million over the next five years to support and expand Vanderbilt-Ingram’s translational research efforts in breast cancer.

Women with a particularly aggressive form of early stage (primary) breast cancer may miss out on optimal treatment which may include chemotherapy and trastuzumab (Herceptin) as a result of untimely or missing HER2-status test results, according to doctors responding to the results from a North of England Cancer Network audit of HER2-testing today.
