The GDC's Standards Committee will be continuing its work on GDC guidance on dental professionals carrying out non-surgical cosmetic procedures, including Botox, at its meeting this month. The Council aims to have the final guidance available later this year.

Boston University Goldman School of Dental Medicine (BUGSDM) has received a $14.5 million grant-the largest award in the School's history and among the 10 largest at Boston University Medical Campus-to fund the Center for Research to Evaluate and Eliminate Dental Disparities (CREEDD) until 2015.

The first students to become qualified Orthodontic Therapists have just graduated from the University Hospitals Bristol NHS Foundation Trust's Bristol Dental Hospital. Orthodontic Therapists are a new group of Dental Care Professionals created by the General Dental Council. They can assist dentists in carrying out orthodontic treatment and provide some treatment themselves.

Over-the-counter mouthrinses really do put a stop to bad breath. The first systematic review on the effectiveness of mouthrinses shows that they play an important role in reducing levels of bacteria and chemicals that cause mouth odours. Pick which one you use though, because some can temporarily stain your tongue and teeth, warns this new review from The Cochrane Library.

New research* from Implantium, a newly launched provider of dental implant solutions (implant supplier), reveals that a lack of skills is the main reason why so few dentists offer dental implants. Implantium's research shows that just over one in three UK dentists carry out implants, with 64.

The British Dental Association has today acknowledged the pledge by the Department of Health to work more closely with the profession as it seeks to resolve the issues with dentistry identified by the Health Select Committee's report on dental services. The commitment is made in the Government's Response to the Health Select Committee Report on Dental Services.

An extra £11 million will be allocated to dental hospitals across England to fund new IT systems that will support the training of dental students, the Department of Health announced today. Today's funding is part of a joint initiative by the Department of Health, NHS Connecting for Health and the Dental IT programme board.

An Oakland County man has been stopped from illegally practicing dentistry, following a lawsuit filed by the Michigan Dental Association (MDA). Oakland County Circuit Judge Daniel O'Brien issued a preliminary injunction October 1 against Everett VanDenEeden, doing business as Smile-Rite Denture Center.
