In a new study researchers from Aarhus University, Denmark found bacteria in the follicles of acne patients and healthy individuals to be those of previously known species, disputing the theory that acne is caused by some yet-to-be-identified bacteria. They report their findings in the October 2008 issue of the Journal of Clinical Microbiology.

A paper in this issue of the Journal of the Royal Society of Medicine discusses how thickening of the palms can in some cases be an indication of underlying malignancy - in particular, ovarian tumours. This palmar fasciitis or fibrosis - where the tissue on the palms feels hard, almost wooden - sometimes occurs in conjunction with polyarthritis (where multiple joints become arthritic).

This knowledge gap is closed in a paper featured in the first issue of Fibrogenesis & Tissue Repair, a new open access journal published by BioMed Central.

Researchers at McGill University, King's College London and GlaxoSmithKline Inc. have identified two genetic variants in caucasians that together produce an astounding sevenfold increase in the risk of male pattern baldness. Their results were published Oct. 12 in the journal Nature Genetics. About a third of all men are affected by male pattern baldness by age 45.
